We have often been asked about the history of Cavender’s. We enjoy telling the story of James Cavender and how it all got started; his first retail venture, his vision.
The year was 1957 and Elvis Presley was riding high! So was James R. Cavender! He took a chance in Pittsburg, Texas to open a Dairy Mart that year. So, what do those two things mean to you? Not much if you didn’t like rock and roll and hamburgers! But for those who did, Cavender’s Dairy Hart was the beginning of a successful career for a man who believed that hard work and good customer value would keep him in business for a lifetime.
Eight years later, James took another chance and opened a retail western wear business for men and boys; and the rest, as they say, is history. A really proud history, at that.
Company founder, James Cavender, is still active and involved. He often can be heard in the halls of Cavender’s headquarters in Tyler, Texas. His wife Pat still decorates all new and remodeled stores. Her diligence and attention to detail helps ensure that customer’s experience the signature western style in each store. Eldest son, Joe Cavender serves as president of the company while operations and leasing are headed by Mike Cavender. All private-label apparel is developed by Clay Cavender who also serves as vice president of merchandising. The Cavenders credit their success to the dedication and loyalty of their associates.
The family lives the western lifestyle, operating five working ranches throughout Texas and they gather inspiration for their products saying they are “ranch tested.” Cavender’s stores carry work wear, classic western styles, the latest trends in ladies and men’s fashion, accessories, home décor and of course, boots!
At Cavender’s, we take exceptional care of our customers, striving to provide the best value, selection, and service in the business. It’s true - Cavender’s has something for everyone.
The year 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of Cavender’s. When you visit one of the newer stores, you will see pictures of James, Joe, Mike, Clay and their families as well as grainy black and white photos of their grandparents on the old ranches in Albany, Texas and Idabel, Oklahoma. “We understand the Western lifestyle, as opposed to a more corporate type atmosphere. We know the Western wear business and the lifestyle,” says Joe Cavender. Many years ago, James was quoted as saying, “There is a four letter word: W-O-R-K... Nothing is going to happen unless you’re willing to WORK.” His work ethic and that of his family and many dedicated associates, have allowed the company to have an incredibly successful 50 years.
Cavender’s extends a hearty “Thank You” to customers, associates, vendors, and friends for making a 50th anniversary possible.
