We have often been asked about the history of Cavender’s. We enjoy telling the story of James Cavender and how it all got started; his first retail venture, his vision.
The year was 1957 and Elvis Presley was riding high! So was James R. Cavender! He took a chance in Pittsburg, Texas to open a Dairy Mart that year. So, what do those two things mean to you? Not much if you didn’t like rock and roll and hamburgers! But for those who did, Cavender’s Dairy Mart was the beginning of a successful career for a man who believed that hard work and good customer value would keep him in business for a lifetime.
Eight years later, James took another chance and opened a retail western wear business for men and boys; and the rest, as they say, is history. A really proud history, at that. Nearly 50 years and 60+ stores later, Cavender’s Boot City and Cavender’s Western Outfitters have become synonymous with the well-dressed Texan.
Cavender’s is truly a family operation - with wife Pat, sons Joe, Mike and Clay; all are involved in the day-to-day operations. The family lives a western lifestyle on Texas ranches, so they are in tune with the merchandise that offers the best value, style, and durability.
